Why a Seat Ibiza Replacement Key Won't Work

Remove the key fob's cover for the battery compartment (A). By using a thumb nail or flat-head screwdriver, prise upwards on the cover. Replace the CR2025 battery.

Dead Coin Battery

If your key fob stopped functioning and you're not in a position to reprogram it using an entirely new code, the most likely culprit is a dead battery in the coin. Replace it and you'll be able to make it operational again - you can do it yourself in under 10 minutes.

Flip the key open first from the side without the metal rings. You can remove the clip-on lid using your nail. The old battery can be removed via the hole in the middle. Note: If you replace the battery in error, or using a battery not suitable, it can cause damage to the remote. Replace the battery with the same voltage, size, and specification as the original.

If your key fob was submerged in water, you might also need to clean the chip prior to replacing the battery. This is particularly crucial especially if you've dropped it into the ocean or in soapy wash water. This must be addressed immediately, as exposure to water can damage the electronic chip and cause your key fob to stop working.

Worn Buttons

The key fob can also stop functioning if the buttons are worn out. This is another easy fix and it only requires you to swap out the old keyshell for a new one.

It is essential to replace the button cell battery in a timely manner or the key fob might be damaged. It's recommended to always replace the battery with the same voltage, size and specifications. It is essential that the polarity is facing upwards on the new battery.

The key fob is secured by rubber seals that will keep water out. However, submerging the key fob in water may cause the seals' to break and damage the chip inside. This usually happens if you accidentally drop your key fob into the pool or leave it in the rain. If your key fob still doesn't work even after replacing it or reprogramming, the receiver module may be defective.

Water Damage

Radio Interference

If your car's radio appears to be acting strangely or the key fob is no longer functioning it could be caused by an interference issue with the receiver module that is in the key. This can be corrected with an alternative key and a new receiver module purchased from Seat parts.

To replace the battery, simply remove the key and gently lift the cover of the key fob's compartment for the battery with your thumb or a screwdriver that has a flat-headed head. Take off the old CR2025 and replace it with a brand new battery, ensuring that the polarity is right. You can also use a regular key that has a transponder chip that was before on a worn or damaged key. It can be coded and cut to fit your car and, if required.

Faulty Receiver Module

The receiver module is the component on the key fob, which transmits the radio signals to your vehicle. If the fob stops working it could be because the module has gone faulty. This can be diagnosed with an OBDII scan tool or by calling the dealer.

Other devices that utilize the same frequency may interfere with the remote keyless entry system. This can include mobile phones, electrical devices, and even household appliances.


If the fob is exposed clean tap water, it could be possible to clean the electronic chip with paper towels and isopropyl Alcohol. If the fob's key was submerged in salty or soapy water or left for a long period of time on a wet surface it is likely to be damaged and must be replaced.

To change the battery in your key fob make use of a thumb nail or small screwdriver with a flat head to pry open the cover of the button cell compartment (B). Remove the old battery, and replace it with a new CR2025 battery, making sure the '+' polarity is facing upwards.
